To be in the “change management business” means we find ourselves with our clients in many different transitions, often substantial and profound. But most often they involve five primary ways we add value:

  • Innovating Strategy – Analysis and Imagination: We are called upon to deploy both analytic and creative thinking skills to define and solve a wide range of business challenges in non-standard ways. Clients value our ability to think differently about their business, and help them to find creative solutions, often to do with growth.
  • Facilitating Conversation – Listening and Speaking: Our clients and their teams look to us as skilled listeners and responders in order to organize messy information in a way they can use to take action. From formal workshops to unstructured conversations, we ask revealing questions, listen carefully, find patterns in the responses, create conceptual categories and re-tell the story we hear in a way that makes sense and is useful to the client. When they say with satisfaction “Did we come up with that?!” we know we’ve done our job well.
  • Providing Perspective – Seeing from the Inside and the Outside: Our clients partner with us because we stay close enough to be relevant but far enough away to retain objectivity. We are “inside” enough because our experience with clients facing similar issues in other industries enables us to speak with relevance. At the same time, we stand “outside” of the organizational and political dynamics to name what everyone is thinking but perhaps no one will say, the classic role of the “third party”.
  • Bridging Relationships – Bringing Together “Our Side” and “Their Side”: A key part of the planning and executing of strategies often involves bridging relationships under strain. We have an ability to “live in the middle”, seeing both sides of an issue in order to help people and teams deal with relational and ideological conflict in a productive manner.
  • Nurturing Vision – Living in the “Here and Now” and the “Not Yet”: Our clients often compromise giving the necessary time to think about the long-term view in order to meet the demands of the moment. We have the ability of helping clients see their business over a longer time horizon – the “not yet” –  in order to help them make better decisions in the “now”.

In practice, that means our consulting craft consists primarily of:

  • The design and facilitation of workshops, retreats and learning programs that are part of a larger organizational transition
  • The delivery of individual leader and director performance feedback
  • The crafting and articulation of organization strategy – its ideas, logic and implications
  • The design of organization and governance structures and senior roles
  • The personal coaching of teams and boards, leaders and directors

Many other consultants make the same claims. If we are better at our craft than they, it is because we are quick studies, less personally remote than others and more adaptable and creative than most. Many of our clients, it seems, keep us around for a while – that is perhaps the best evidence of all.

We equip you and your team to think and make decisions yourselves. True, we teach you new concepts and ask the tough questions. We also challenge your initial answers, pushing you to reach for greater insight and clarity.

You will face reality

We allow our clients to confront reality. We all know that Directors face conflicting loyalties and expectations every day. For example, Directors must seek the very best candidate to lead a business, and then subject that person to constant scrutiny on behalf of the shareholder. Directors recruited to give supportive advice or to share business contacts must also question, challenge and assess management decisions and actions. We counsel Directors to define and address these conflicts – explicitly. We also help them face up to the Director’s reality of scarce time, drive by rising demand and limited supply.

You will manage conflict

Most of us have grown up fearing conflict. Conflict is, however, an important source of information, without which our decisions would be less rich. We create a safe environment in which our clients can use conflict creatively, build their skills, and feel and be more successful.

You will learn how to build organizational capability

We believe that the solutions lie in the people themselves. We help them to identify and strengthen both the competencies that are currently critical for success and those that will be needed in the future.

You will learn how to cope with change

Large-scale change programs face daunting odds. Sustained success depends on growth in leaders at all levels, who see the change as their creation, not a program imposed on them by others. We do offer and teach frameworks, tools, and concepts for client teams to apply. We do challenge their initial thinking, so your people will make it better. We do suggest how to expand on and exploit their own ideas. Still, our clients always keeps the leadership of change – of deciding and of taking action – squarely in their own hands. We support our clients to grow more capable and self-sufficient, throughout our relationship.

With Unique Expertise

We focus ourselves and our expertise in four areas where we believe the most impact towards our purpose can be realized; on Boards of Directors, with Senior Leaders, with Leadership Teams and through the use of various communications to facilitate change. Authentic organizations are built through:

  1. The effective stewardship of the Board, those who hold the Enterprise as their primary responsibility and so are the primary custodians of its Purpose.
  2. The impact of leaders at every level in the organization, whose personal expression of the Purpose of the Business is a major influence.
  3. The example of the senior Leadership team, and some other visible teams, as models, as exemplars, of how the Purpose, Brand and Culture are to be lived out.
  4. The consistent “surround-sound” of messages, externally into the market, internally within the organization, in all sorts of media, that together evidence the desired and realized consistency between Brand and Culture.
